Celebrating the work of photography icons that influence our visual culture today
Far before the advent of the digital tools we use today in photography, Jerry Uelsmann pioneered photo manipulation. His integration of multiple negatives using darkroom techniques transform vast landscapes into surreal scenes often emulated today by Photoshop artists today.
What I love most about Jerry’s work is the incredible devotion to craft and vision to explore and push the boundaries of our conventions of photography. His prints are a demonstration in shaping of light in the tradition of the early masters like Ansel Adams. To me, his work also expands upon the surrealist painter movement, pushing our concept of the frozen moment into a dreamlike visual. I think it’s fair to say that his influence is far reaching today. Swedish photographer Erik Johansson is a great example of the expansion and development of modern photo collage and manipulation.
